all i can say is that the idea we had about tying our hooks on upside down worked as niether me or dean will have to go to barston and packington somers to fish the final, (result). just kidding i did try ,honest.
i drew peg 51 which as i really fancied as i had won off it last weekend, so i set up the same rigs, a shallow rig , a rig for the island, a margin rig and a depth rig to fish 14 mtrs down to the reed bed to my left.
i,m not going to bore you with the details of how my match went as it was pants, it was a struggle to get any consistency to the bites ,it was one of those days when you seemed to get one fish at a time from any one swim, the only place i could get ant activity was by the reeds to my left at 13 to 14 mtrs, i had 2 shallow , 2 on the bare bank opposite and 8 down to my right, for a total of 12 fish which went just over 27lb and absolutely no chance of getting in the top 5.
the match was won by des shipp with 90.14 on peg 32 catching shallow in the reeds

another day on the cider. weds open
we were on yarlington again today, and with gale force winds forcast a draw with the wind off my back would be nice, but no i go and pull 56, which is looking thru a gap between 2 islands so the wind was funnelling straight at me , it was a good job it was a warm wind but i think thats going to change by the weekend with the wind going to be more of a north westerly but less of it.
good to see warren bates here for a bit of a practice, i had a quick chat with him in the carpark and as he had drawn 19 which is a proper flier at the mo i thought he might have a chance of getting a few, that was until he asked me if caster might be worth a go, it seems you can take the boy away from the river but you cant take the river away from the boy, at least the rudd would be grateful, at the end he said he did get a couple of fish on double caster, good for him ,i suppose someone had to buck the trend on that peg sooner or later lol.
back to my peg and i set up a 4x14 rig to fish the margins either side, a 4x16 rig to fish corn at the bottom of the far shelfeach side of the gap and a 4x10 rig to fish to the island.
at the start i cupped in some corn and 4mm,s at 10 mtrs in front and to the right by the reeds at 13 mtrs, the same each side in the margins , and some 6,s to the island.
starting on the 10 mtr line i had a carp first put in then a couple of decent skimmers and a couple more carp, but then i began missing unmissable bites, then i started catching rudd(mint),i put that down to the fact that warren had stopped feeding casters. a switch to the 13mtr line to the right produced the same, so my thoughtys of it being a corn day went out of the window, so i put in a pot of 6,s on the 10 and 13 mtr lines and got the island rig out, to be honest there were plenty of fish up on the shelf but the wind was making it nearly impiossible to present, and i like to kinder my feed in on this venue as it stops the fish dissapearing into the island foliage, but i had to take the pot off the end as it was adding to the wind resistance, so after each fish i potted in about 20 pellets after each fish which seemed to work, also by now i had begun firing some pellets to the reeds on the 13 mtr line, for a bit of a rest i came back to the deep line at 10 mtrs and took 2 carp fairly quickly. i did look down the margins but that only produced rudd and roach but the wind was blowing the rig along so i knocked that on the head, i got the island rig out , took a shot off and went shallow to the 13 mtr line , firing 6,s in and using the same on the hook i soon started to get bites and catch so that was it for me up until the end, i ended up with 30 ish carp , i should have had more but i needed to pull quite hard to get the fish away from the reeds so i pulled the hook on a few , and several were faster than me and made it to the reeds but thats the nature of the venue(at least it will give des something else to moan about at the weekend ha ha).

cider farm
it was supposed to be a talk angling and bus company pairs match today ,but as the bus boys had an important meeting about closing a depot they couldnt make it , so i said i would take it over so as they didnt lose there deposit. we still managed to put 26 anglers on the bank so its another reasonable turnout.
steve lippett drew for me and handed me peg 40, as i havent been here to often i didnt ave any idea as to what the peg was like, but as i was next to venue regular rod wootten on 41 i thought it would probably be ok, to be fair it lokked good with an island opposite with 4 ft reeds growing off it, so i made up a 4x14 impact 4 with a 16 b960 to .16 for hair rigged pellet, the same rig would do for down the edge each side as it was the same depth . a 4x10 for over by the island to my right as i had bare bank to fish up to , and a dibber for shallow just in case , both rigs on .16 with the usual b960.
starting over against the reeds opposite it wasnt long before i was getting liners but no matter what i was really struggling to transfer anything into a bite , and the reeds were going potty, i did manage a couple of fish from the reeds but it was full of snags , no matter how i fed it i just couldnt make any sense out of it , even with odd fish showing and the reeds knocking i couldnt get a sensible resonse on the deck or shallow so dumped a big pot of 6,s in and went some where else!!!!!!!!!!.
a quick look down the margins each side rusulted in a couple off carp then it went quiet there so i turned my attentions to the right hand island,i took a few fish befor it went quiet , over to the reeds again but a snag had now appeared, 2 foot off the bottom where i had cupped in my pellet, it wasnt there just now so i decided to quit that line and concentrate on my margins and the right hand island . chris davis on 38 was now catching regular by fishing behind the weeds and dragging all his fish over the top, it seemed a bit brutal but it was effective, and funny cos those of you that know chris will bne aware of his tantrums , and ater pulling for a break again as he had snagged the reads again the float came back and hit his finger , he was off his box nurseing his finger and kicking his rod bag and swearing loudly(never a dull moment next to chris).
by rotating around my swim i kept odd fish going so by the end i had 26 carp and 1 skimmer and i thought i had upper 40 lb, i seemed that it would be out of chris and ryan summerhayes on 20 who had been catching steadily down his right hand margin on paste .
as itturned out chris davis,s skull dragging technique had paid off as his net went 77.11 peg 38
2nd was 15 year old ryan summerhayes with 69.12, some one to watch in the future me thinks
3rd phil (fabio)harding on 46 with51.8 and another 2 quid off me to boot

its a nice venue that has matured well its just a shame the reeds have got such a good hold as the fish spend most of the day in them at the mo, hopefully they will be more inclined to come out and play as the weather and water warms up

deciderdly hard
with me and the carps club booking cider farm for a match, and with both lots only getting 10 anglers we decided to join forces and have one match.
i drew 28 and after a quick look at recent results i could see no mention of peg 28, great, but then again every day is different , and the peg did look ok with a gap between islands , and one of the few pegs where you could fish tight to the island, but it turned out to be to shallow , rigs today , 4x14 rigs one for in the gap for pellet and one for corn down the left by the reeds, and a 4x12 rig to fish pellet across at 13 mtrs to some proper reeds not those crappy big norfolk snag pits. and a 4x10 rig to fish tight to the island, but as i said it was to shallow(12 inches)cos the water was quite clear after the weekends frost and last nights rain, and i did try it a couple of times during the match but never had any indications so i wont mention it again.
at the start i cupped in some 4mm at 13 mtrs in the gap some by the reeds and threw some pellets and corn at 3mtrs to my left margin, starting in the gap with 6 and 8mm pellet on the hook , i never had abite in the first 45 mins so i went to the far bank reeds and at least i had movement , and after a bit of adjustment to the depth the first carp was on its way.
2 hours in and i had 8 carp in the net, 5 across and 3 down the edge but again no bites,it was about now that mark walked round and said it was fishing very hard and that dave roper on 25 had 8 fish and that was about the best he had heard of , so i was still well in the race.
with 2 hours to go i reckon i had 15 fish in the net, and i was really struggling for a bite anywhere, so i put in about 50 grains of corn in the channel between the islands and started to feed more with the catapult towards the reeds, and it seemed to have the desired effect as i began to catch fish on corn and also the reeds to my left also started to show signs of life, trouble is you never really know as to whether it was down to the increased feed or just time of day that has made them have a go , but by swapping bertwwen my left margin , the channel and the far bank reeds i probably had 15 fish in the last 90 minutes.
by the time the scales got to me top weight was dave roper on 25 with 47.3, i was next to weigh and put 63.9 on the scales and as it turned out was enough to win with steve kedge coming second just 1 fish behind with60.3 on peg 36

ciders all round
its been 18 months since i last went to cider farm , and what a difference, masses of reeds which have grown like wildfire. talking with mark before the start and his advice was not to feed or fish near them, makes sense i suppose but the fish dont always want to come out especially if its bright, no danger of that the forcast was for a cloudy and mainly dry day with just the chance of a bit of light rain late in the day so i left my coat in the van!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. i,m beginning to think that the met office would stuggle to get last weeks lottery numbers right, needless to say i got soaked.
back to the draw and i pulled 25 which as you cider regulars will know is a flyer , luckily gary cross drew it at the weekend and managed 25 lb off so it has had a bit of a rest,i did say that if i did worse than that i would take up diy and sell my kit (i only bet on certanties).
first drop in at 11mtrs to my left on 8mm hard pellet and i had a 3 1/2 pounder on the deck swiftly followed by several more fairly quickly. with a gap in front of me and an island left and right at 11 and 13 mtrs i decided to concentrate on these 2 areas feeding 4mm with a catty. by the end of the first hour i had 10 carp in the net but then began to get liners and odd foulers so out with the shallow rig and the response was instant and by moving between the 2 islands feeding 4,s and with a 6 on the hook i ended up with 67 carp and when the scales arrived they went 159.9. apart from the good soaking and a quiet 4th hour when it went a bit hard and i had to go back on the deck it was a good day.
2nd off peg 46 was now venue regular rod wooten with 93.3 caught mainly on the deck feeding 4,s and using the same on the hook.

and i got me quid back off fabio i wont say anything about him cos he did make me a chicken and sweet chile roll for after the match and i must say it went down a treat, oh and what did he catch, well apart from roger andoniou who went home with hypothermia , probably due to his old thin blood , fabsy never weighed .
